The MINDS-i competition program is designed to develop skills in problem solving, mechanical engineering, electronics engineering and programming. Kids and instructors participated to find new levels of passion and enthusiasm for robotics and technology based careers.

Student teams solved various applied learning challenges and competed in a number of hands-on robotics categories.

Challenge #1: Approaching the Mineshaft Opening
Teams navigate the corridor leading up to the mineshaft opening autonomously (hands-free).

Challenge #2: Entering the Mineshaft
Teams use an array of IR lights along the ceiling of the mineshaft to autonomously navigate (hands-free) the first portion of the mineshaft.

Challenge #3: Gaining Access to Trapped Mineshaft Worker
Teams carefully dismantle the brick-wall trapping the worker; using a robotic arm of their own design.

Challenge #4: Acquiring the Mineshaft Worker
Teams acquire the worker.

Challenge #5: Rescuing Mineshaft Worker
Teams navigate through a series of treacherous pathways containing various obstacles, while keeping their mineshaft worker safe.

The kits are all made out of the same basic pieces, with helpful step by step instructions. The MINDS-i platform consists of simple beams and connectors that lock together to make a durable chassis.

Even before transportation designers join the world's leading automotive companies, as students they're already leveraging 3D printing to test their innovative concepts.

Based in Pasadena, California, the prestigious Art Center College of Design features a Transportation Design program whose alumni you'll find in virtually every major transportation design house - from Porsche and BMW to Ford and Toyota.

Join the school's Director of Rapid Prototyping and Model Shops, David Cawley, as he explains how their Objet 3D Printer from Stratasys is helping students turn their cutting edge ideas into fine-featured, realistic 5th scale models. The students routinely meet with top transportation designers from all over the world, including Jaguar. As you'll see -- turns out that the Jaguar XR was almost entirely developed using 3D printing!

This is the only 3D printer of its kind in the world able to create complex assemblies made of moving parts - each of which is printed in a different material.

These personalized iPhone cases, designed by Danny Tasmakis (http://grabcad.com/danny.tasmakis) were 3D printed on an Objet Connex 500 multi-material 3D printer and feature moving inter-locking gear wheels! This is the only 3D printer of its kind in the world able to create complex assemblies made of moving parts - each of which is printed in a different material. In this video, you see a small selection from among the total Stratasys range of 107 materials, including transparent, black, transparent with patterned dots and grid lines, white and various composite grey/blue shades.

Marble Falls Junior and Senior students will have the opportunity during the second semester of this school year to earn Industry Certification in programming and operating FANUC Robots. FANUC Robots are used by Texas companies like Dell, Kraft, John Deere, Lear, Toyota, and many high-tech and oil industry firms.

“Our goal is to help our students be workforce ready when they graduate from Marble Falls, said Guffey. “Our Career and Technology Education (CTE) Robotics class will produce students with robotics certification who can go to work in Central Texas right out of school. Our students will also be prepared to advance their training in Community College and University programs.”

The new FANUC Robot is scheduled for delivery to MFHS in October. Once it is delivered, Mr. Guffey will attend an intensive certification program in November so both he and the MFHS CTE program are both certified to deliver the Robotics training beginning in January of 2015.

Vickers Engineering President and CEO Matt Tyler says that automation has not replaced people in his shop, but instead has expanded the workforce. Without robotic automation, he says, this New Troy, Michigan, supplier of precision machined parts would have maybe 80 to 90 employees today, instead of the much larger number it currently employes. Because of the way robots have made the shop more competitive and increased the value of each of employee, the shop now employs around 200. Learn more about Vickers’s experience with robots in this video produced by FANUC America. Read Article...

Two years out of high school, Evan Fischbach is earning $40,000 a year. His secret: shop class. When Fischbach was still a junior, a local auto dealer desperate for mechanics hired him as an apprentice in the service bay. Now he’s earning about three times as much as the average 19-year-old high school grad and slightly more than the national median, according the Bureau of Labor Statistics... read more

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) announced last year that they planned to replace printed science text books in their schools with eBooks that could be downloaded by the students and teachers. A Houston-based educational resources company decided that schools would benefit from a far more ambitious resource and invested heavily into developing a 21st Century science teaching program that will show the rest of the world the future of education. Texas schools are not being offered eBooks as a replacement to their printed textbooks, they are being offered eLearning.

Tech Labs, based in Houston, decided to develop a full eLearning solution with engaging, dynamic, multimedia and interactive content as an alternative to ‘eBooks’. After all, most of the elementary schools across Texas are already using media-rich science eLearning materials supplied by Tech Labs – why shouldn’t the middle and high schools have access to similar resources as well? They saw little advantage in simply digitizing existing text.

SciTex Learning consists of a blended learning solution with powerful theory presentations that are fully illustrated with video, animated graphics, simulations and interactive activities. Each presentation is accompanied by a tutor character that will add a voice-over for the information on the screen.
